What is the Bull Dog® Taper Tap used for?
The Taper Tap is used to fish tubulars or tools by catching them internally. It threads into the inside diameter (I.D.) of the fish using hardened tapered wickers, allowing you to recover stuck pipe, tubing, or downhole components without external engagement.
How does the Taper Tap work?
The tool is lowered into the fish and rotated slowly. Its heat-treated tapered threads (called wickers) bite into the I.D. of the stuck component. As rotation continues, the taper tightens — locking the fish onto the tap for retrieval. Circulation can be maintained through the center of the tool.
What types of fish are best suited for the Taper Tap?
Use a Taper Tap when you're targeting:
Tubing or casing with an open I.D.
Broken tool joints
Downhole plugs or sleeves
Accessories without fishing necksIt’s a first-choice tool when the I.D. is accessible and you need a simple, solid bite.
What sizes and options are available?
Bull Dog offers Taper Taps in multiple O.D. sizes with fluted or non-fluted wickers, depending on your retrieval needs. Fluted designs allow circulation through the tap, while non-fluted models offer more contact surface for aggressive bite. Custom tapers and connections are available on request.
How is a Taper Tap different from a Box Tap?
A Taper Tap catches internally by threading into the inside of the fish. A Box Tap catches externally, threading onto the outside of the fish. Both tools are threaded and tapered, but used in different scenarios based on fish accessibility and size.
