The Scrugrab® is Bull Dog's answer to the headache of wireline recovery. Unlike traditional barbed grabs that can shred or pack the line into a birdnest, the Scrugrab® screws directly into the mesh, untangling as it engages. Designed for torsional strength, this corkscrew-style tool grabs, twists, and extracts wireline, electrical cable, or corkscrewed rods cleanly. Available in ODs from 1.7" to 5.5", it’s ideal for cased-hole cable fishing operations in 4-1/2" to 7" casing.
Applications
The Scrugrab® fishing tool design provides an improved
method to recover wireline or cable from a wellbore.
Features & Advantages
The corkscrew-like design offers several advantages over the conventional two or three-prong grabs:
The tool is designed to screw into the mesh of wireline in the hole rather than to spud on it.
The corkscrew action tends to loosen the wireline rather than pack it down into a compacted ball ("birdnest") that will probably require a washover or milling Job.
The tool provides the torque strength to screw into the mesh of line and the tensile strength to part the line once it is engaged.
The tool does not have the tendency to cut the line into small pieces similar to the results often experienced with barbs on grabs.
The tool is available in sizes designed for the various casing sizes; therefore, the proper size tool can be run to prevent the wireline from getting above the tool and eliminate the risk of sticking the tool.
Left hand and larger sizes available on request.

What is the Bull Dog® Scrugrab® used for?
The Scrugrab® is designed to recover wireline, electrical cable, or corkscrewed rods from the wellbore. It offers a more effective, less destructive method of engaging tangled or coiled line compared to conventional barb-type grabs.
How does the Scrugrab® work?
The tool features a corkscrew-style cutting profile that threads itself into the bird-nested wireline or cable as it rotates. This not only entangles the line but also helps loosen and free compacted debris, increasing your chances of a clean pull.
What makes the Scrugrab® better than standard grabs?
Screws into the mesh instead of just stabbing at it
Minimizes bird-nesting and compaction of the line
Offers high torque and tensile strength to part or pull
Won’t shred the wire into short, unrecoverable pieces
Available in a range of casing sizes to prevent sticking above the tool
What sizes are available for the Bull Dog® Scrugrab®?
Standard sizes include:
1.7"
2.2"
3.5"
4.5"
5.5"Custom sizes and left-hand thread options are available upon request to match your specific fish and wellbore.
When should I use the Scrugrab® over other wireline recovery tools?
Use it when:
You suspect a tangled or corkscrewed wireline
You’ve had limited success with prong grabs or barbs
You’re concerned about compacting the line or damaging the casing
You need a torque-capable recovery with controlled engagement
