The Float Sub is one of the most important—and most overlooked—components of the entire bailer system. While the pump creates the lifting action, the Float Sub preserves every stroke by allowing debris to move upward while preventing material from falling back into the well.

Bull Dog® Tool’s Bailer Subs are designed to work in conjunction with Bull Dog Tool’s Bailer and Multiplier by allowing for the removal of difficult inorganic and organic debris. The large flow-through area will allow for easy transport and removal of sand and/or other debris.
A bailer system is only as effective as its ability to retain what it recovers. The Float Sub was engineered to maintain dependable one-way flow, allowing debris to move into the tubing cavity while preventing it from falling back into the well. It's a simple concept, but one that has a major impact on overall recovery efficiency.

Applications
The Bull Dog® Bailer Float Sub is a critical component of the Bull Dog® Bailer system, designed to improve the efficiency of wellbore cleanout operations by preventing recovered debris from re-entering the hole. Installed in the lower portion of the Bailer assembly, the Float Sub houses a durable flapper valve that controls one-way flow into the tubing cavity during operation. The Bull Dog® Bailer system uses reciprocating pump action to draw fluid, sand, scale, paraffin, cement, and other wellbore debris through the bottom-hole assembly and into the tubing string for removal.
As the Bailer Mandrel is stroked, the pressure differential created by the tool opens the Float Sub's flapper valve, allowing fluid and debris to enter the attached tubing cavity. Once flow slows or stops, the flapper valve automatically closes, trapping the recovered material inside the tubing and preventing debris from falling back into the obstruction zone. This one-way valve action maximizes cleanout efficiency, improves debris recovery rates, and reduces the need for repeated passes over the same interval.
The Bailer Float Sub is commonly used in work string assemblies designed for wellbore cleanouts, sand removal, scale removal, debris recovery, bridge plug retrieval, packer retrieval, and other downhole remediation operations where circulation is limited or unavailable. By retaining recovered material above the valve, the Float Sub helps operators clean out obstructed wells without loading the hole with additional fluid, making it particularly effective in low-pressure formations and wells sensitive to fluid damage.
